There are social and political advantages of separating the political and financial capital (as in the USA, Holland, Switzerland and other countries). Desmond Fennell proposed Athlone as the new political capital. Brian Caul I think proposed a site near the Hill of Tara. Any thoughts on this:

Desmond Fennell proposed Athlone as the new political capital. Brian Caul I think proposed a site near the Hill of Tara. Any thoughts on this: I'm not sure how moving the capital would work out in practice. Logistically it would be very difficult, since the motorway and rail networks radiate from Dublin, and few civil servants would be willing to move out of the capital. You are right when you say that there are advantages, certainly, though I would personally wonder if these outweigh the potential pitfalls?

I think proposing a new political capital for Ireland helps people to see that they can change the structures of government themselves. It breaks what someone has called a 'crippling mental orthodoxy' as to propose the slogan 'Dail Eireann for Athlone' can encourage people to see that also, say, the centralisation of government structures on the whole isn't inevitable. Beyond the benefits of merely proposing a new political capital, I am also of the opinion that it would be actually good for Ireland to have one. I think the benefits would outweigh the disadvantages and I think it would be only fair in the offer to the Ulster British that we would share a new, and so, in a kind, a neutral capital. Athlone makes some sense as its in the centre of Ireland, and this is a neutral reason for having it there. Being at the centre is symbolic but also it is practical as it is easily accessible from any direction.
What would be the other benefits of separating the political capital from the financial capital? The political structures and people would not be biased towards policies slanted to benefit the largest financial centre. A separate political capital could view Ireland fairly and would influence policy with this multi-centred vision. Also, a separate political capital would create a new centre of economic weight, less than that of the financial centre. This new centre would be a redistribution from the financial centre of capital which would mean a more fairer distribution of wealth/expertise/etc in the country.

Romantically, I like the idea of a capital at Tara.
Perhaps it could take some of the pressure off infrastructure and accommodation in Dublin, too.

Yeah, that did occur to me, since the only non-prolife rally I've ever attended was a rally opposed to that highway passing by Tara!
It could be some distance away...

Indeed. As I said, moving the capital is not a priority for me. My issue is not so much where the capital is, but that it is too much power compared to the rest of the country.
